Dresden neo-Nazi rally turns violent

More than 10,000 German activists have gathered in the eastern city of Dresden to block neo-Nazis from holding a rally in commemoration of a 1945 allied bombing of the city.

Although the organizers of far-right neo-Nazis expected up to 6,000 protesters to join the rally on Saturday, only 600 supporters showed up, IRIB reported.

The Routes they had planned to take were kept secret and more than 4,000 policemen were deployed in the city to prevent thousands of anti-Nazis from clashing with them.

The rally was called to mark the 66th anniversary of the 1945 allied bombing campaign that killed more than 20,000 people.

The presence of far-right Nazis and the protection they received from the German police angered thousands of citizens and activists.

Clashes erupted between the two sides and police forces when anti-fascist demonstrators breached the barriers and charged into the site where neo-Nazis had intended to reach from different parts of Dresden.

Police used teargas, water cannon and truncheons to control the tense situation. Dozens have been arrested by anti-riot police.
