Al J report from yesterday:

12:09 pm There was a large protest at the Libyan embassy in London last night - a location with a history of confrontation and violence. A protester there apparently managed to gain access to a roof, take down the all-green Libyan flag and replace it with the tri-color flag - adopted by protesters - that Libya used after gaining independence in 1951. Now we have video of that moment:

(CNN) -- Foreigners are making a run to get out of volatile Libya, with thousands hustling to the Egyptian border and foreign governments scrambling to help their citizens.

snip

Lt. Col. Raouf Ezzat, an Egyptian military doctor overseeing medical care of the fleeing people, said the army is permitting only Egyptian citizens and Libyans married to Egyptians to enter Egypt.

snip

The French Foreign Ministry said that it had sent three planes to Libya to help repatriate French citizens and that its embassy in Tripoli was helping to get citizens to the airport.

snip

A Dutch Defense Ministry spokesman told CNN that "a Dutch military plane has been authorized to land in Tripoli today to evacuate about 100 Dutch nationals" and a NATO commander said a Dutch frigate is heading there as well.
Britain said its citizens who don't have "a pressing need to remain in the country should leave by commercial means if it is safe to do so." Britain also "is looking urgently into options for possible charter flights.

snip

The State Department was chartering ferries to take travelers from Tripoli's As-shahab port to Valletta, Malta on Wednesday, the official said, adding, "Tomorrow the question will be if they let the ferry dock. If that happens, our people will flow out."

LONDON, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Oil production in Libya is expected to shut down completely and could be lost for a prolonged period of time, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said on Thursday.

'We expect Libyan production to be shut down completely and we might lose sweet crudes from Libya for a prolonged period of time,' Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Sabine Schels told Reuters.

Schels said that the world faced the prospect of real supply shock in which the loss of 1.6 million barrels per day of sweet oil could potentially trigger a steep rise in prices and force a sharp reduction in demand to balance the system.

Libya's Tribal Revolt May Mean Last Nail in Coffin for Qaddafi

Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi spent most of his 41 year-regime trying to sideline the country’s tribes. That may be something he’s now regretting as his power unravels.

Akram al-Qarfalli, a senior member of the Warfalla tribe, on Feb. 20 announced it was withdrawing support from Qaddafi, saying “he is no longer a brother.” The Al-Zawiya tribe threatened to halt the flow of oil if Qaddafi doesn’t stop killing protesters. By Feb. 23 most tribes were united in their opposition, says former interior minister, Abdul Fattah Younis.

“The tribes are powerful, especially outside urban centers,” said Charles Gurdon, a Libya analyst and managing director of the London-based Menas Associates political risk consulting firm, in a phone interview. “The fact the majority of them are now opposed to Qaddafi is probably the last nail in the coffin.”

This is Debka, so grain of salt please.

Hundreds of US, British and French military advisers have arrived in Cyrenaica, Libya's eastern breakaway province, DEBKAfile's military sources report exclusively. This is the first time America and Europe have intervened militarily in any of the popular upheavals rolling through the Middle East since Tunisia's Jasmine Revolution in early January. The advisers, including intelligence officers, were dropped from warships and missile boats at the coastal towns of Benghazi and Tobruk Thursday Feb. 24, for a threefold mission:

1. To help the revolutionary committees controlling eastern Libyan establish government frameworks for supplying two million inhabitants with basic services and commodities;

2. To organize them into paramilitary units, teach them how to use the weapons they captured from Libyan army facilities, help them restore law and order on the streets and train them to fight Muammar Qaddafi's combat units coming to retake Cyrenaica.

3. The prepare infrastructure for the intake of additional foreign troops. Egyptian units are among those under consideration.

I bet Janey & others would know if it were true.

Sounds like another Debka funnybook story to me.

from Lurker

Colonel Gaddafi's family wealth takes shelter in London

COLONEL Gaddafi secretly deposited 3 billion pounds ($4.8bn) with one of London's Mayfair private wealth managers last week as he sought to protect his family's fortunes.
The deal was brokered on his behalf by a Swiss-based intermediary who, it is understood, had previously approached another well-known City stockbroking firm five weeks ago with a view to depositing funds.

However, when that stockbroker discovered the ultimate identity of the source of the funds, it advised the intermediary to take his business elsewhere.
