Government to redefine Britain's relationship with European Court of Human Rights

Ken Clarke has admitted that the Government will seek to redefine Britain's relationship with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg within months.

The 70-year-old, currently a Member of Parliament for Rushcliffe, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, has said that he would press for changes to the way the court operates when the UK takes over control of the Council of Europe in November.

Clarke, speaking on the Andrew Marr show this morning, said the ECHR would continue to be adhered to, while last week it was revealed that a newly formed commission - jointly led by Clarke and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg - would be set up to analyse to possibility of a British Bill of Rights.

The commission has been set up to work out at whether the UK Bill of Rights could overrule the ECHR, which is based in eastern France in Strasbourg.
