Israel probably can't do anything about that would be legal, but that's never stopped them before.

hi Lime and Limp,
from what I've read on the canal the last few weeks the SCA of Egypt has sole control of the canal, and will not deny access or passage
based on any national flag or port. I'll try to find it again

Interesting, and not surprising.

Of course, what happens to the ships when they are out of the canal is a different matter. Israel has far more control (legal or not, more than likely not) over that.

Just in:

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/18/us-egypt-iran-warships-idUSTRE71H3BD20110218

(Reuters) - Egypt's military is studying an Iranian request to send two naval warships through the Suez Canal and had been told the vessels did not carry military equipment, nuclear or chemical contents, an army statement said on Friday.

"Egyptian armed forces have received a request through the Egyptian Foreign Ministry from the Islamic Republic of Iran's affairs office in Cairo requesting the passage of two Iranian warships," according to a statement given to Reuters by an army source.

"The request said the ships do not carry any military equipment, nuclear or chemical contents. The Defense Ministry is currently studying the request," it said. The source said the ships were in regional waters in the Red Sea and said a decision on whether to approve passage could be made Friday or Saturday

How can they be "warships" but also not be carrying "any military equipment..."?

Then i suppose they won't mind a full inspection,of all their missile tube torpedo tubes and antiaircraft guns oh and what's that anti electronic warfare system doing on a non warship?
I think a nice tight escort to Syria would be called for.

Yeah, I can't see that happening though somehow. Who would escort them anyway?

Hey folks,

Quick post as I will be away from my system today. Just as FYI beyond the Suez Canal there would be no military escort
In international waters. Iran would not be that Bold to adventure into israeli waters, would it? Though this may be a valid excuse
For Israel to create an international incident. Either way moving through the canal will be
Playing with fire.

from what i can tell the largest ships are actually towed in certain areas of the canal.

and factually Egypt can and has boarded and inspected ships in the past

When the 100-mile waterway was opened in 1869, it was 30 feet deep and 100 feet wide, adequate for most oceangoing vessels at the time. It soon became a main trade route for steam-driven passenger and cargo ships because it reduced travel time between Europe and East Africa, South Asia, China, Japan, and the East Indies. The canal was supposed to be open to ships of all nations in war or peace, but Britain made sure that it was closed to shipping for Germany and its allies in both world wars, and Egypt barred its use to Israel and to other countries' ships carrying goods for Israel until 1975. The canal was administered by the Canal Company until it was nationalized by Egypt under Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1956. Since then it has been administered

The canal is owned and maintained by the Suez Canal Authority[6] (SCA) of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Under international treaty, it may be used "in time of war as in time of peace, by every vessel of commerce or of war, without distinction of flag."[7]

I would assume the Americans or British would have assets in the med. They could be used to shadow these ships and make sure they don't go off mission.
Not to mention the national reconnaissance office most likely has a bird over the area as we speak.

I'm not sure Israel would be that bothered if they were in international waters, if they see them as a threat (and statements imply that they do) then you never know.

Given the level of tension, if those ships are granted clearance, once they are in the med...I say anything can happen.

Agreed.

Apparently it takes 24hrs for a permit to be issued (if it does) and the first sailing/convoy of the day is 9am GMT.

Im not sure about other times during the day. This is information that Janey may have.

Those ships are not a threat. Israel knows this, they are just saying it's a threat to get attention on what Iran is doing.

A crappy frigate ain't no threat, even for the mighty Canadian navy... :p so imagine the Israeli navy. Rolling Eyes

The only ``threat`` is the arms they MAY carry to Hezbollah.

Thanks Janey, it sounds like the same horsehockey the russians were giving Kennedy when their boats were on the way to Cuba with nukes.....history has a way of repeating itself

Don't forget; last year Israel detained an aid ship bound for Gaza while in Egyptian waters. Obviously, they don't care about borders enough to play according to maritime laws. Most of the Arab states are experiencing civil unrest to some extent or another right now. IMHO, Israel would be more than happy to take advantage of the situation and do as they please regardless of who's waters these ships are technically in or whether or not they actually present a threat.
