Sockie Basics: How To Use Twitter For Posting News

Post by Lurker on Thu Feb 17, 2011 5:03 am

Maybe many of you are aware that Twitter has become a great tool for real-time news, easy available for anyone.. (that's the ideal situation of course Wink )

If you intend to use Twitter as a source for posting news on the rolling update threads or anywhere else, I would like to give you some advices:

---------------------------------------------------------
The easiest starting point will be from here:
---------------------------------------------------------

http://twitter.com/

you don't need to have an account

The best way using the search-engine is to use hashtags... that's just the word you are looking after, with an # before Wink

example, if you are searching for egypt.. you should try: #egypt

If you are interested in the current situation in various Middle-East regions, you can also try using the revolution dates which have been associated with each country.. they are sometimes leading to the most results Wink

you can find these dates here
http://littlesocknews.4rumer.com/t393-schedule-for-middle-east-revolutions

(but they will also show up in the search results when you search for the country simply with #countryname Wink )

---------------------------------
Try to avoid retweeting.
---------------------------------
You can easily spot a retweet as it says "RT" and the name of the Original Teeter, and perhaps names of other Retweeters.

example:
_n_normal shamanyalkhaili RT @maryamalkhawaja: RT @hussain_info: heading to Zamalik in #Egypt were #bahrain embassy is.

that's hard to read, isn't it? And it also complicates the chronology of events. In attempt to keep things chronologically posted, please try to ALWAYS search the Original Tweeter. That isn't difficult, it's just the first Tweeter before the message appears..
In that example, it would be the "hussain_info"

--------------------------------------
Try to find credible sources.
--------------------------------------
News Sites, Journalists, Bloggers, Activist Groups, People on the Ground, etc.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have the time, please clean up some tweets that are hard to read (e.g. lots of # hashtags in it)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
