Post by Lurker on Tue Feb 15, 2011 11:00 pm

Time to start a thread on Lbya, since the planned Day Of Anger is near, and people already took to the streets today

Uprising in Libya -unarmed protestors getting shot on 02-15-11

After Fathi Terbil, the spokesperson for the families of the martyrs of Abu Sleem was arrested, the families took to the streets to demand his arrest. Shortly thereafter, other citizens came to join the demonstration.

Just to drag you into the thread Wink
-----------
Cairo, Asharq Al-Awsat – Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has dealt with the calls being issued by the National Conference for the Libyan Opposition [NCLO] and Libyan [political] activists for a Libyan "Day of Rage" to take place on 17 February, modeled on similar events in Tunisia and Egypt, by issuing an unprecedented warnings against any attempts to create chaos and instability in Libya.

[..]
The NCLO has called for mass protests to take place inside and outside of Libya on the anniversary of the 17 February 2006 uprisings in the city of Benghazi where protests against the Danish cartoons of the prophet Muhammad were transformed into mass demonstrations against Gaddafi and his regime, resulting in the death of dozens of protestors and the injury of many more.

In a statement to Asharq Al-Awsat, the NCLO said that all Libyan internal and external oppositional forces intend to carry out protests and demonstrations at various levels against Gaddafi and his regime on the anniversary of the 17 February 2006 protests. The NCLO official also told Asharq Al-Awsat that he hoped that the people of Libya had learned from the victory of the Tunisian popular uprising.

There are unconfirmed reports from within the city of Benghazi demonstrators themselves, that security forces had killed two of the demonstrators

URGENT: demonstrations in Benghazi are now concentrated in the Quiche region at the scene in front of the battalion, and the second assembly at the tomb of Omar Al-Mukhtar.

Group wants to break the building of the Revolutionary Committee to burn their files only

The crowds, however, did not appear to direct their anger at Moammar Gadhafi, who has ruled the nation for more than 40 years.

Just a short report on the Prison Killings in 1996:

More on Libya

In the summer of 1996, stories began to filter out of Libya about a mass killing in Tripoli’s Abu Salim prison. The details remained scarce, and the government initially denied that an incident had taken place. Libyan groups outside the country said up to 1,200 prisoners had died.

Violent protests break out in Libya
Clashes reported in eastern city of Benghazi as security forces and government supporters confront demonstrators.

Signed statement

A group of prominent Libyans and members of human rights organisations have also demanded the resignation of Gaddafi.

They said that the Libyans have the right to express themselves through peaceful demonstrations without any threat of harassment from the regime.

The demands came in a statement signed by 213 personalities from different segments of the Libyan society, including political activists, lawyers, students, and government officials.

It seems the tweets that the demonstrations were directed solely to Ghadafi are coming from quite a few different tweeters...

So, it's people vs. news outlets at the moment... maybe you can find out more? Smile

on it now Lurker. I dont have any sources on the ground there, but will dig around on the wires.

What I am reading so far is that a prominent lawyer was arrested leading to the initial unrest, but that spark has quickly ignited into a more anti-regime stance.
