PHNOM PENH (AFP) – Fresh clashes broke out along the Thai-Cambodian border near a disputed temple Sunday, armies from both countries said, ending a ceasefire agreed after fighting left at least five people dead.

"We are fighting now, they started firing at us first," a Cambodian military commander told AFP, referring to Thai troops across the border.

Thai army spokesman Colonel Sunsern Kaewkumnerd confirmed the renewed unrest, but accused the Cambodian side of reigniting the violence.

Thai, Cambodia troops clash for fourth day on border

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PHUM SARON, Thailand - Thai and Cambodian troops clashed for a fourth straight day on Monday over a disputed border area surrounding a 900-year-old mountaintop temple, deepening political uncertainty in Bangkok and prompting Cambodia to urge U.N. intervention.

Four straight days of fighting is unheard of, this could turn into an all-out war at any moment.

Thousands of Thais flee fighting on border with Cambodia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bangkok/Phnom Penh - Thousands of Thai civilians on Monday fled fighting between Thai and Cambodian troops in an intensified border dispute that has raised calls for international intervention. Renewed fighting broke out Sunday evening in Thailand's Si Sa Ket province and Cambodia's Preah Vihear province, about 450 kilometres north-east of Bangkok. Fourteen Thai soldiers and two villagers were injured, Thai army spokesman Colonel Sansern Keowkhamnerd said.
The fighting, which started Friday, has killed two on the Thai side - one soldier and one civilian - and injured 31. Cambodian sources said their side has suffered three dead: two soldiers and one civilian.

Thailand and Cambodia face diplomatic pressure to end dispute - 11 dead, 89 wounded so far - Three Cambodian soldiers interviewed by Reuters on Wednesday said the number of Cambodians killed is likely higher than the government has indicated. They declined to be identified by name because they were not authorized to comment. "There are many more deaths and injuries. People would be shocked," said one of the soldiers, adding that his deputy commander was killed in a clash on Sunday when a Thai shell hit the area near their unit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PREAH VIHEAR, Cambodia (Reuters) – Thailand and Cambodia faced growing diplomatic pressure on Wednesday to end an armed standoff on a stretch of border surrounding a 900-year-old clifftop temple as guns held silent for a second day. Reuters witnesses said about 20 Thai tanks were sent to a military camp in Kantaralak district in Thailand's Sri Sa Ket province close to the disputed border, but Thai army officials said they were not reinforcing troops in the area. Thailand and Cambodia blame each other for provoking intense exchanges of fire that killed at least three Thais and eight Cambodians since Friday. At least 34 Thais and 55 Cambodians were wounded, according to official statements from both sides.

Cambodia calls claim of soldiers at temple slander

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Wednesday, however, hundreds of Cambodian soldiers were seen by Associated Press journalists deployed in and around the sprawling temple compound, which was fortified by sandbagged bunkers. Weapons were visible around the complex, including rifles and rocket launchers leaned against temple walls. An 81-mm mortar tube was positioned in a pit pointed at Thailand, across a ravine from the Cambodian frontier.
